Saying Goodbye Twice/ Prepping for Reality

Hi,
I'ts me again; yesterday was my mother's funeral. I lost her unexpectedly on Tuesday August 27th, 2019 @ 4:56pm MST. I know it's a date, it's just a jumble of numbers but I'll never forget being at the side of her hospital bed when they removed her from life support and the nurse walked in to say she had 'officially' passed. I looked at my clock as though it'd give me the winning lottery numbers to life so I could bring her back. That's not how death and life work.

Saying Goodbye Twice....is hard. The first time...really was the hardest.

If you're lucky enough to have had the chance to say goodbye the first time, when you were by their side as they left this world; then this is the hardest goodbye of all. It's the goodbye you never wanted to say, but life has taken that decision from you and made it the only option you have. But like I said saying goodbye..twice is hard.
I lost my mother in 6 days; she was an unexpected death she had been admitted to the hospital, on Thursday August 22nd; she had been having flu/cold symptoms, a low grade persisting fever, they'd started her on blood transfusions, while waiting for pathology to come back. They don't work the weekend so we had to wait the weekend for Monday to come around to get a diagnosis. My mother though she was worried had been improving very much: She'd been eating more, using bathroom regularly, she felt herself enough to make her bad jokes, with her sisters and my grandmother.
Monday Aug 26th the Dr. Tells my mother she has some sort of leukemia (they were still trying to diagnose the exact type) but he felt he could treat her; possibly even CURE her. That was the best news we'd had, she was supposed to be moved another hospital TUESDAY, so she could begin treatment.
Tuesday Aug 27th, at some point during the evening monday/morning of Tuesday my mother started having breathing issues. She had given the hospital permission to intubate her so they could help her breathing, let her lungs rest. Thats when the end of 'my life' as I know it started. They Xrayed her chest and found her lungs hardening, the infection (fever) she had been fighting as well as the leukemia was becoming too much for her, in a matter of hours her organs began to shut down.. one by one. That was it; we kept her on life support long enough for family to arrive by 2-3pm. Then we said our goodbyes, and I watched my mother take her last breaths; asleep, without pain, without suffering 'high as a kite' as she used to tell us if anything like this happened: Her wishes. Then she was gone.

That was the hardest goodbye. The first time; when there was no control just this numb, auto-pilot acceptance that there was nothing modern medicine would do for her, for me, for my aching soul and heart. There was nothing divinity if it exists would do to bring my mother back, to make he health whole, even though it never had been since I could remember.
But that truly, was the hardest goodbye, the one you don't want to say but you have, looking at it in hindsight you have the HONOR, the BLESSING, the PRIVILEGE to say it. Because there are those; that will never have that opportunity. Be grateful for it, when time lets you heal somewhat to acknowledge this or accept it. It truly is a blessing.

Grieving for a Week

Now here I am; in this surreal world without my mother, my back bone, since I was a child it was myself, my grandmother and my mother against the world. We lived together; I tried to take care of her, and my grandmother both the best I could. I am not the 'I love you' type, hugging and kissing, spending time sort of daughter. But I showed my love by doing my best to give them both especially my mother any material item she wanted (when I had a good job).
But, the grieving has been the hardest roller coaster ever. The first two days and especially that night, I cried my eyes out. I didn't eat for 3 days, and I wandered my house like I was floating (not in a good way) it was like...I managed to wake up and I felt horrible for being able to wake up and be alive without her. I cried to God, the Universe, Life, to anything listening asking WHY...my Mommy.
Why her after everything she had been through in her lifetime: Thyroid cancer, abdominal tumors, 2 cornea transplants, diabetes, facial skin cancer and more. Life. Has since I was child been trying to take her from me. I could never understand why. I still don't, my mother IS an angel who helped everyone even if she had nothing to help with other than herself, her heart, her kindness, she did it for them.
I thought of this too while I grieved and I began on the 4th day to behave disturbingly normal, as though it was the regular life I had last week before she passed; with or without her the days dont stop, the clock doesnt stop ticking, time wont stand still. It keeps moving. I felt such shame, guilt for how I was behaving I thought I should be crying my eyes out 24/7 for the rest of my life, losing my 'world' that is how I was behaving after losing my world....It bothered me so much.
Yet I've come to learn, as much as it bothered my no one person grieves 'appropriately' like there is some outline. You can google the stages of grief but it's just some jumble of the biggest things people go through and it's never in the order given as we are human and humanity has never been one to stick to 'rules' other than that of life and death.

Saying goodbye twice. The second goodbye, was....hard but I was OK with it.

Yesterday was her funeral, September 5th, 2019. I'd been dreading that day, it was my own personal doomsday; set to a time and place where I was going to be taken down to the lowest place in my life before everyone to see. Without my mother to support me in all my stupid ideas even at my age (32), I was her baby! No matter what I did she'd be there to just, tell me what I did wrong, what she felt I did right, my assurance was gone. I walked into the big doors of that mortuary and I thought; I'd never be the same but I'd already change I just didn't know it yet.
Her lilac casket was at the end of this old mortuary, they tried to keep the place looking nice but truth be told, in that small town we came from it had seen finer days. But there she was, my grandmother went first; she's taking it the hardest no one wants to bury their babies. I am trying to be super strong for her but I don't think I have strength for myself much less for two people... I watched my grandmother crying, and the fear crept up into my heart as I could barely see my mother's hair and nose.
I was afraid seeing her in her casket, embalmed, would take the image I had of her in my heart, in my soul. When she passed infront of me in the hospital she looked like she was sleeping; I wanted to remember that. Even if she'd gasped for those last few breaths of air before it all ended, the death rattle she'd given as the last bits of air made it through her tired lungs on that hospital bed she had been in the end: Sleeping.
There was something though in me, that couldn't help it; I was there, so was my mommy just waiting there for a last goodbye. I didn't wait for confirmation that she LOOKED like her, I went to her, and when I looked into her casket she was so: Beautiful.
A family friend had done her hair just how she liked it, a little spiked up; with her pretty little highlights she'd managed to treat herself to a month or two prior; they hadn't put lipstick or other make up on her per my very direct request to the funeral director so she wouldnt look like a clown. My mom had such a beautiful complexion; almost natural, she was sleeping again....in her pretty purple shirt; those were her colors: purple/lilac.
The previous night I had written her a letter, telling her everything I never got to say to her; and apologizing for anything I had said to her that werent very nice. I asked her to forgive me so many times, for not being the best daughter but I tried when I could, I asked her for her strength even though she was resting; I needed her now more than ever. I promised her I'd be ok, somehow, some way, I wrote from the heart and I told her I hoped everything was in the letter, but if there wasn't to just look into my heart and she'd know the rest: it's hard putting a lifetime down on a few pages.
My fear was gone, something in me at the funeral settled; something in seeing that mortuary full with almost 100 people of the lives she had touched throughout her own lifetime. That I wasn't the only one that had lost this amazing, wonderful woman but the WORLD had lost her.
Her funeral let me be, in a word or two words rather: At ease.
We watched the slide show my cousin had put together of her, blasting her favorite singer of all time: BLAKE SHELTON with her baby pictures beginning to show us all snipets of her life, ending with her at some casino drinking either a midori sour or some other drink she'd found out by accident (my family arent drinkers so seeing it was so funny).
Her smile IS beautiful, her soul IS beautiful, and there in the desert heat; as they lowered her casket, the songs she enjoyed played/sung by local band as the father (catholic) said last words as they set her to the ground was like finishing a portion of a book I'd never wanted to put down, and I can only re-read/revisit it in my memories.

The reality.

The reality is, my mother despite the hardships given to her lived as good a life as she was given or allowed. I have to be grateful for that, so many love her; and although she is physically gone she is here still, alive and well in my heart, and the hearts of those that knew her.
For some of us it may not seem that way; but all we can do is try to keep going, that's all I know I can do. For her, for me, I will keep going, no matter how hard it gets because someday I will be with her. Either in the universe, in heaven, or simply gone; just a memory I too will find my place beside her in this reality. Life and Death.
So for those that are struggling keep on, say your goodbyes, say your I love yous while you can. There will never be enough time, understand that: There is never enough time. There will always be things you wished you could have done different, said different, been different, but the truth is: What was was, and what is is and will be.
Entrust that all is forgiven, even the hardest of relationships, because if you can't forgive yourself with them, for them and try to make the NEW YOU in this NEW LIFE, without them even though EVERYTHING else is the same in that surreal way.
It'll be super hard. It'd be lying if I said it'd be easy, because life...is hard even if you do have it easy.

BILLS - Please advise!
Right now the hardest part is the reality of what comes after the emotions, what comes after the grieving, the funeral of an unexpected death of someone you love. I am going to be in charge of her things, she never had a policy (life-insurance) and she had nothing to her name than what I had given her. Or helped her to get over the years, and I was wondering if anyone of you knew about how these things worked, you know. Everything after.
As she has no estate, and her hospital bills will be coming soon, on top of her general debt what am I to do? I google and all I find is estate and probabte but there is nothing in that; I have been considering a 'gofundme' to costs of funeral but with a impending arrival of a possible $20-40k hospital bill I'm at a loss.
Anyone that can give me suggestions to steer me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE GRIEVING AND HAVING ISSUES WITH DEATH

I recommend: This TEDTALK to anyone grieving, whether new or old, because when you lose someone you love, that love never dies and no one should expect it to. Not even yourself.
https://youtu.be/kYWlCGbbDGI

I also recommend this youtuber; she's witty and funny, it will make death entertaining in a way. She talks about death, the funeral industry and how over the years death has become this 'taboo' thing where being with or near a body is a no-no and you should embrace every moment with your loved one if you can, if able (I understand for traumatic death that can be different) but KNOW your rights in the funeral industry, know that DEATH is part of life and its OK, and also learn about the macabre history of death. Through Caityln.
